The Brightest Young Minds in Neuroscience Gather at Brunel University for the National British Brain Bee 2024

London, UK – February 3, 2024 — The National British Brain Bee 2024 ignited the intellectual energy of aspiring neuroscientists from across the UK as they gathered at Brunel University London for a full day of competitive brainpower, inspiration, and discovery. This flagship neuroscience competition, aimed at secondary school students aged 14–18, took place on Saturday, February 3, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Brunel University, London.

  • Location: Brunel Medical School, Quad North Building, Brunel University, Kingston Lane, Uxbridge, UB8 3PH
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM UK time

This year’s Brain Bee featured over 50 students from across the UK, competing in:

  • written multiple-choice exam
  • Neuroanatomy and histology visual analysis
  • clinical patient diagnosis challenge
  • high-stakes Live Q&A round in front of a live audience

In addition to the competition, students and parents heard from leading neuroscience professionals, including guest speakers Annie Chan, David Mikhael, and Jeremi Chabros, all dedicated advocates for public science engagement. A guided tour of Brunel University for parents was offered during the morning session.

Empowering the Next Generation of Scientists

“We’re creating more than just a competition,” says Martyna Petrulyte, the event director. “This is a national hub for young people who are obsessed with the brain—and not afraid to prove it. Whether they win or not, every student walks away more confident, more curious, and more connected to the scientific community.”

With a special emphasis on inclusivity and fun, the event included interactive brain games, a cupcake break (because brains need sugar), and professional development interviews conducted by media volunteers Kate & Patricia.

Awards & Prizes

The top-performing students received trophies, certificates, neuroscience books, and exclusive gifts. A group photo and awards ceremony capped off the event, ensuring participants leave with memories and mementos of their achievements.

Key Partners & Volunteers

Organised in partnership with Brunel University’s Medical and Psychology departments, the event is supported by volunteers including medical students. The team was led by Janet, Senior Engagement Officer at Brunel, with logistical coordination by Elizabeth and Martyna.

And the winner is…

After highly intensive exams, the best students have been selected.

3rd place Xinyu Liu (Victoria)
2nd place Sara Margareta Brizzi

And the National Champion is Tomos Llyr Hunt!!!

Final Note: Cupcakes Are Coming

Because nothing says “I survived a brain exam” like a frosted dopamine hit, a cupcake break was scheduled before the final awards. Yes, it’s science-fair-meets-GBBO.
